A Wedding in Tuscany - Castello di Vincigliata
Being the fan of fairy tales and Disney movies that she is, my cousin, Rachel, decided to get married in an actual medieval castle. And since she is one of my closest female cousins (both in friendship and in age), I was stoked to be there!
Originally built in the 13th Century and located a few miles from Florence in the Fiesole Hill, the Castello di Vincigliata has been a family stronghold, a glass production center and a prisoner-of-war camp during World War II before finally settling down to it’s most fitting role, a wedding venue.
But it’s not just some medieval castle, it’s a haunted medieval castle!
As an internet page so eloquently claims:
"The top room of the tower is also home to the ghost of Selvaggia, daughter of Giovanni Usimbardi, who fell dead of heartbreak when she saw her future husband struck down by his brother on their wedding day — she now appears, dressed in white, to succor desperate lovers.”
Good stuff, people!! Good stuff!!
* Definitely not Helm’s Deep but close enough!!
* The lions, Mufasa and Simba, guarding the door.
* I guess people were falling into the fountain so much that they had to put a protective net!
* The cloisters, a highly conducive area for philosophizing, emoting, expressing a soliloquy and doing cartwheels.
* The beverage / alcohol station aka Homebase.
* Come forth, Aslan, and bid us good tidings and great cheer!!
* The room where I plan to give my daughter’s suitors, “the talk”.
* An authentic 13th century Florentine living room… with lounge chairs from IKEA.
* If any room should be haunted, it should definitely be the one with the dark window at the top!! Hello, Selvaggia!!
* Everyone nervous before the wedding; everyone, that is, except the bride and groom.
* Mom looking elegant; dad looking sharp; me looking inebriated.
* The beautiful bride and bejeweled groom on their big day. Congrats again you guys!!
