Sleepy and Charming Villefranche sur Mer
After the insane shopping and sight-seeing of Barcelona, the excitement of being in Europe for the first time got bogged down by every traveller’s worst enemy, jetlag. As we started our Mediterranean Cruise, I had to fight to stay asleep.
THANK GOD, our first stop was the charming and sleepy town of Villefranche sur Mer.
With picturesque scenery (see above) and a laid-back, relaxed vibe, sur Mer was our most hassle-free and uneventful stop in the whole trip, and that’s a GOOD THING.
* Cobblestone streets with hardly anyone leading to more cobblestone streets.. with hardly anyone.
* Sitting in a cafe and taking a sitting power nap to catch up on jetlag WITHOUT getting your valuables stolen = AWESOME
* Danglars Shipping Co. (formerly Morrel & Co Shipping)
* The main street leading up to the town church. No hunchbacks here.
In the end, sur Mer was the PERFECT first stop in our cruise. It was a great foil between the initial excitement of Barcelona and the non-stop sensory orgasm of Cote D’Azur, Florence, Rome and Naples. Any jetlag and fatigue that I had initially felt disappeared after we left sur Mer, with its charming provincial vibe.
If I had but one regret, it was that Marseille was just an hour away from sur Mer and, being the huge Count of Monte Cristo fan that I was, that fact didn’t occur to me until after the trip. Would have been nice to see the Chateau d’if and the land of Dantes, Danglars and Villefort.
